USA tops in quad

ESSEXVILLE — After winning the Bad Axe Invite a weekend ago, USA continued a good streak with a trio of wins Wednesday.

The Patriots took all but one game in wins over Ogemaw Heights (25-9, 25-17), host Garber (25-12, 17-25, 15-11) and Bad Axe (25-17, 25-17).

“We looked better and it gave the girls some new goals for practice,” coach Scott Smith said. “We’ll see if they accomplish them by our tournament (on Sept. 8).”

Carly Trieber led the way with 26 kills and 21 digs while Kiersten McBrayer had 33 assists.

Dani Gremel helped on 10 blocks, including two solo blocks while Minda Martinez served a perfect 28-for-28 with three aces.

Thursday result:

New Lothrop Invite

Cass City went as far as making out of pool play with four games won, but finished 2-2 on the day Thursday with a loss to Lapeer East in bracket play, falling 25-19, 25-23.

Cass City beat Ogemaw Heights (25-17, 25-22) and Laingsburg (25-17, 25-22) while falling to Mount Morris in pool play (25-15, 25-23).

“Our main goal was to beat Mt. Morris,” Cass City coach Beth Howard said. “We played them at team camp and were unable to beat them. They have a tough middle and a really good libero.

“Although we had a lot of hitting errors against them, the balls we did attack at them they dug up. They played awesome defense against us, but the girls did not give up.”

Carly Howard led the team with 32 kills and digs in the four matches while Lauren Dillon added 22 kills, 27 digs and two blocks.

Amanda Langenburg had 62 assists while adding 14 digs and Megan VanVliet chipped in 27 kills.

Kristie Karr led the team with three blocks.

“We are struggling in the middle right now and can’t wait to have Sarah Howard healthy and back in the lineup,” coach Howard said.

Carly Howard made the all- tournament team.
