Cardinals appoint Mozeliak as general manager

CHICAGO (Reuters) – The St. Louis Cardinals have promoted assistant John Mozeliak to become their new general manager, the team said on Wednesday.

He replaces Walt Jocketty, who was sacked by the Cardinals in October after nearly 13 years in the post.

The 38-year-old Mozeliak had served as assistant general manager under Jocketty for the past five years.

After winning the World Series in 2006 the Cardinals failed to reach the post-season this year, finishing third in the National League Central with a record of 78-84.

Despite the disappointing campaign, local media reports said it was friction in the front office and not the Cardinals performance on the field that led to Jocketty’s departure.
