Penguins’ Gonchar out for up to six months after surgery

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar will have a shoulder operation that will sideline him for four to six months, the team said on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old will have arthroscopic surgery on Thursday to repair cartilage and ligament damage to his dislocated left shoulder.

“It is always difficult to lose a very talented player and leader for an extended period of time, but we all believe this is the best decision for Sergei,” Penguins general manager Ray Shero said on the team website ( penguins.nhl.com/ ).

“We are confident that he will come back strong after this surgery.

Gonchar ranked second in scoring among NHL defensemen in each of the past two seasons.
