Tigers get pitcher Washburn in trade with Seattle

DETROIT (Reuters) – Left-hander Jarrod Washburn will be joining the rotation of the Detroit Tigers after the AL Central leaders traded Luke French and a promising minor leaguer to the Seattle Mariners on Friday.

The 34-year-old Washburn, who will be eligible for free agency at the end of the year, has had an impressive first half posting an 8-6 record with a 2.64 earned run average that is third-lowest in the American League this season, Major League Baseball website mlb.com reported.

Washburn gave a strong audition for Detroit last week when he threw seven scoreless innings and gave up just two hits against the Tigers on his way to his fourth successive win.

Left-hander French, 23, joined Detroit’s rotation last month and went 1-2 with a 3.38 ERA in five starts, though he has lasted six innings just once.

Seattle also received 20-year-old Mauricio Robles, who has split his season between two Class A teams, going 8-6 with a 4.24 ERA and 111 strikeouts in 91 1/3 innings.
